The origin of this academic history can be traced back to John Percival, the headmaster of Clifton College, who perceived the lack of a comprehensive university presence in the English provinces. He called upon Oxford colleges in 1872, raising this issue and campaigning for further education in town centers of a region. 

These thoughts came clearer to him a year later with the publication of an insightful pamphlet entitled The Connection of the Universities and the Great Towns. This effort attracted Benjamin Jowett, the then-powerful Master of Balliol College, Oxford, who remained a key source of intellectual support—both politically and financially—and a future prime mover behind University College, Bristol.

A major meeting was held in June 1874 in the Victoria Rooms in Bristol in order to generate support for a School of Science and Literature of the West of England. Led by Percival and Jowett, the gathering was endorsed by influential members including Albert Fry and Lewis Fry, sons of a leading and prosperous Bristol family. Their encouragement provided the impetus for the institution’s official start.

Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol formally opened on the morning of Tuesday, 10 October 1876, operating from a rented building at 32 Park Row. With only two professors and five lecturers, the College initially taught courses in 15 subjects. Right from the start, it followed a progressive policy by admitting men and women on a par—except in the domain of medicine.

The first session witnessed 99 day students (30 men and 69 women) enrolled, in addition to 238 evening students (143 men and 95 women). Alfred Marshall, the first Principal of the Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, was a trailblazing economist who gave evening lectures while his wife, Mary Paley—Bristol’s first female lecturer—taught during the day, though her pay was taken out of her husband’s salary. William Ramsay, the subsequent Principal and eventual Nobel Prize laureate, was instrumental in pushing for university status prior to retiring in 1887. 

He was replaced by Conwy Lloyd Morgan, a respected geologist and zoologist, who went on to become an early pioneer in experimental psychology and eventually the University of Bristol’s first Vice-Chancellor.

Though promising academically, Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, struggled with ongoing financial issues. But the grant of £2,000 by the local Technical Instruction Committee in 1890 provided a temporary respite. The turning point was reached in 1893 when the Bristol Medical School, established in 1833, was officially merged into the College, enhancing its curriculum. There followed in 1896 favourable acknowledgement when Treasury Commissioners praised the College for its energy and work of university standard. In 1899, the establishment of the University College Colston Society united a diverse and powerful support group, yet another boost to the institution’s reputation.

The pursuit of university status accelerated in 1904 with the appointment of Morris Travers as Professor of Chemistry. Travers, an energetic figure who had been recommended by Ramsay, was instrumental in mobilizing political and financial support. They were supported by influential friends like Lewis Fry, R. B. Haldane (later Lord Haldane), and the Wills family. 

In 1906, a formal executive committee was set up to further the vision of a university for Bristol. Even though Travers left that year to direct a research institute in India, the campaign was given a dramatic boost on 14 January 1908, when H. O. Wills offered a gift of £100,000, to be paid subject to obtaining a Royal Charter in two years’ time. 

The munificent offer set off a phenomenal fund-raising campaign with more money donated in 24 hours than was raised in thirty years. Support gathered momentum in a short while as the Merchant Venturers’ College committed itself to uniting with elements of Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol to form a new Faculty of Engineering. 

The City Council also committed financial support through the revenues of a penny rate, subject to the grant of the Charter. Finally, the presentation of the Charter petition to the Privy Council gained royal approval, clearing the way for the founding of the University of Bristol as a full-fledged university.
