The history of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) started in 1858 with the founding of the Cambridge School of Art by the famous art critic, patron, and philanthropist John Ruskin. This school became Anglia Ruskin University later, with the art school continuing to be at the center of the current Cambridge campus. 

Over the years, other colleges and institutes have been amalgamated with ARU, such as the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education, which itself was created from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the Brentwood College of Education. Originally called Anglia Polytechnic, it then became Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992 before eventually settling on the name Anglia Ruskin University.

ARU has invested heavily in the development of its infrastructure, spending more than £115 million to create its campuses. The Cambridge campus was redeveloped in 2011, and in 2014 a specialist healthcare site on Young Street was completed, which includes cutting-edge clinical skills labs, simulated hospital wards, and a specialist Music Therapy Centre. Expansion continued in 2018 with the opening of a new Science Centre and a Law Clinic. 

In Chelmsford, meanwhile, the university has launched ambitious development plans. The campus, moved to a newly built location in 1992, welcomed the Queen’s Building—housing the University Library—officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1995.
