Anglia Ruskin University School of Medicine – Ranking
The history of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) started in 1858 with the founding of the Cambridge School of Art by the famous art critic, patron, and philanthropist John Ruskin. This school became Anglia Ruskin University later, with the art school continuing to be at the center of the current Cambridge campus.
Over the years, other colleges and institutes have been amalgamated with ARU, such as the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education, which itself was created from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the Brentwood College of Education. Originally called Anglia Polytechnic, it then became Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992 before eventually settling on the name Anglia Ruskin University.
ARU has invested heavily in the development of its infrastructure, spending more than £115 million to create its campuses. The Cambridge campus was redeveloped in 2011, and in 2014 a specialist healthcare site on Young Street was completed, which includes cutting-edge clinical skills labs, simulated hospital wards, and a specialist Music Therapy Centre. Expansion continued in 2018 with the opening of a new Science Centre and a Law Clinic.
In Chelmsford, meanwhile, the university has launched ambitious development plans. The campus, moved to a newly built location in 1992, welcomed the Queen’s Building—housing the University Library—officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1995.
The campus has since further developed with the addition of the Business School, the Sawyers Building with its state-of-the-art SuperLabs, the Michael Salmon Building with high-technology medical simulation suites, and Arise Chelmsford, offering laboratory space and office accommodation for start-up businesses. The School of Medicine, opened in 2018, educates tomorrow’s doctors with state-of-the-art skill-based facilities.
Aside from Cambridge and Chelmsford, ARU has also had a presence in Peterborough since 2011, leading to the opening of ARU Peterborough in September 2022. The campus, located in a new building close to the city center, features bespoke-built facilities, such as a mock hospital ward, science labs, and engineering laboratories. In spite of the vast changes the university has gone through since its founding, its mission has never wavered—reimagining lives through entrepreneurial, inclusive, and innovative learning and research. Presently, ARU opens its doors to students from more than 185 nations, with a foremost priority on ensuring an education that inspires, challenges, and empowers them to reach their potential.
The university continues to uphold its commitment to inclusivity, actively promoting students from mixed academic and social backgrounds to seek further education. It gauges its success in terms of the accomplishments of its students, to ensure that they gain the best possible chance for development and progress.
ARU’s research and innovation activities capitalize on the university’s wide-ranging strengths to create solutions that have beneficial effects on lives, communities, and academic curricula. Cited for its friendly atmosphere, ARU is delighted to be a Disability Confident Employer and a Mindful Employer, always maintaining a caring and inclusive academic and professional environment. The university also cares about its broader community, thinking that individual contributions make its impact greater than the sum of its parts.
