Anglia Ruskin University’s story began in 1858 when art critic and philanthropist John Ruskin founded the Cambridge School of Art. Over time, this art school expanded and grew into what today is known as ARU, with its historic roots remaining retained right at the heart of the modern Cambridge campus.

About Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge

Over the years, several colleges and institutions joined ARU to ultimately form Anglia Polytechnic, which later became Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992. These included the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, the Essex Institute of Higher Education, and others.

Significant campus development has taken place, including the major 2011 redevelopment. In 2014, ARU opened its Young Street healthcare site, comprising state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories, mock hospital wards, and a specialist Music Therapy Centre. Two significant new buildings have opened this year: one houses the Science Centre while the other contains the pro bono Law Clinic.
