On Ramadhan 3, 1430 AH, equivalent to August 24, 2009, it was established through a royal decree by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council of Higher Education. This is the same time that three other major universities came into being: those of Dammam, Al-Kharj, and Shaqra Governorates.
