One of the defining features of the young Academy, and a tribute to the persistence of its organizers, led by its first Rector, Professor Bruno Nowakowski—a renowned pioneer in Polish hygiene and occupational medicine—was the capacity to recruit prominent scientific and teaching staff from consolidated academic centers with centuries-long traditions.

Over its first five years, the Academy, with its initial faculty of Medicine and Department of Dentistry, consciously created a complete range of clinical and theoretical units necessary for medical education of high caliber.
The theoretical faculties, the Rectorate, and the University Library initially occupied a former hospital complex of the Bracka Company at Rokitnica, and the clinical departments were spread across hospitals in Bytom and Zabrze. Plans to construct a modern university campus at Zabrze existed when the university was founded, but because of the lack of investment opportunities, they never came to fruition.
Similarly, efforts to consolidate the Academy’s Bytom facilities came to nothing. As a result, the institution was forced to extend its “temporary” clinical base into other urban centers in the Silesian region, such as Lubliniec, Tarnowskie Góry, and Katowice. To augment its clinical resource, three major teaching hospitals were set up in Zabrze and Biskupice, providing a complete range of inpatient care, together with specialist outpatient services.
By the latter half of the 1950s, when the prospects for further progress in Zabrze subsided, the Academy started contemplating a move. This led to a strategic move to relocate the seat of the institution to Katowice and set up a new campus of learning in the Katowice-Ligota area.
The next ten years were a turning point: the Rector’s Office was moved to the region’s capital, and the fourth large clinical hospital was commissioned at the Andrzej Mielęcki Hospital, which was the largest Katowice healthcare facility at that time.
At the same time, the foundation stone was laid in Katowice-Ligota for the construction of the Central Clinical Hospital, new medical sciences departments, dormitories for students, and a nurses’ residential hotel. The process came to fruition in 1971, when the Council of Ministers officially appointed Katowice as the permanent seat of the Medical Academy of Silesia.
Rapid expansion was experienced in the 1970s, when the Academy grew to become the largest medical education center in Poland. New faculties were added, such as the Faculty of Pharmacy with a Department of Medical Analytics in Sosnowiec.
In Katowice-Ligota, other facilities came into being step by step, which allowed for the introduction of a second Faculty of Medicine and a Faculty of Nursing, which was later merged as a department of the second Faculty of Medicine. The range of academic programs further expanded in 2001 with the establishment of the Faculty of Health Care in Katowice and the Faculty of Public Health in Bytom.
Over the past decades, the University has experienced a significant increase in the number of competitive research grants from outside sources received by its personnel, indicative of the increasing prestige of the University in scientific innovation. Increased international collaboration has also expanded the range of activities.
Scientific research undertaken by the University covers a broad range, including established strength in etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy of cardiovascular diseases, blood and hematopoietic disorders, kidney diseases, and metabolic syndromes. Sophisticated research in genetic engineering, molecular diagnostics, and environmental protection is conducted actively, as well as groundbreaking research in rehabilitation techniques for musculoskeletal diseases and novel solutions for obstetrics.
