It is proud of being at the forefront of academic practice: combining excellence with innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit inspired by its namesake, the great 19th-century engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
This university’s founding leaders finally decided that the institution was to be named after Brunel in 1957. Brunel’s first Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Topping favored naming it after a great engineer or scientist connected with Middlesex or Acton.
This resulted in the choice of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806–1859, one of Britain’s greatest engineers. Brunel was a pioneer of the Industrial Revolution and is acclaimed for his ingenious work on railways, bridges, ships, and public buildings. His legacy of innovation and determination has been carried over as a hallmark into Brunel University that wears his name.
