The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tabuk is one of the developing medical institutions in Saudi Arabia, which has earned, over time, a reputation for academic excellence, innovation, and community service. Although young, this Faculty has, through remarkable developments, pursued the realization of the Saudi Vision 2030 aspirations in strategies that integrate the national objective: a highly-skilled and globally competitive health workforce.
The vision of the faculty is “to be a distinguished faculty in education and research, both locally and regionally, that effectively contributes to community service.” Inspired by this vision, the faculty adopted the Saudi Medical Education Directives Framework, a fully competency-based model that has been widely approved by the National Center for Academic Accreditation and Evaluation and the Committee of Deans of Colleges of Medicine in Saudi Arabia.
It stipulates the minimum learning outcomes expected to be attained by graduates from medical schools and confirms that the students have acquired the necessary skills, knowledge, and professional values to practice medicine competently in contemporary settings.
Since its inception, the Faculty of Medicine has implemented a wide array of strategic academic and infrastructural developments aimed at advancing the quality of medical education. Among the major advances of the institute are the establishment of the Cyber Anatomy Laboratory and the fully accredited, state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Center, where active exposure is provided to the students using advanced medical technologies, virtual anatomy systems, and simulated clinical environments. Such top-of-the-line facilities ensure that the students emerge well prepared for the real clinical challenges of life with complete confidence and precision.
On the academic front, major curriculum reforms were initiated by the Faculty, including a shift in pedagogy from a traditional lecture-based system to an integrated and system-based one that centers on students.
There has been the introduction of several novel learning strategies in the curriculum, such as TBL, PBL, and the Flipped Classroom model of learning. These active learning methodologies enhance critical thinking, independent learning, teamwork, and the application of medical concepts to clinical scenarios.
Another innovative approach introduced into the curriculum is the supervised Peer-to-Peer Student Teaching, ensuring the development of communication and leadership skills in students, while at the same time fostering a strong peer support network.
Equally important, the Faculty of Medicine is focused on medical research and innovation. Along that line, the Student Research Group was developed at the Faculty in an effort to promote undergraduate research activities in cooperation with tertiary care hospitals as well as research institutions.
A first step ahead was the creation of the first international peer-reviewed medical student journal in the Gulf region: the Saudi Medical Journal for Students, offering young researchers an opportunity to publish and share their scientific output.
Moreover, the Faculty regularly publishes an official newsletter entitled MedEdu Tabuk for building a network of health professionals in the Tabuk region. This would later come to mean networking of over 10,000 subscribers comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and paramedics, among others, including students, all with the purpose of contributing collectively to the betterment of healthcare delivery and community welfare.
The Academic Advising Program within the Faculty has also been complemented with Peer-to-Peer Student Advising, whereby senior medical students advise and mentor their junior colleagues. Thus, it contributes meaningfully to building academic success, as well as emotional and professional development among the student community.
Besides academics, students from the Faculty of Medicine are actively involved in community-based health activities. They have arranged and participated in various public health awareness campaigns, outreach programs, and voluntary medical services, which reflect the deep commitment of this Faculty to serving society and enhancing the overall health literacy of the community.
The University of Tabuk Faculty of Medicine is emerging as one of the leaders amongst the new generation of Saudi medical schools through its unwavering dedication to quality education, advanced training, and societal engagement.
