Tottori University Faculty of Medicine Yonago – Ranking

The roots of the Tottori University Faculty of Medicine run deep in perseverance and community dedication. Yonago Hospital, which boasted a long and prestigious history since the Meiji Era, was conveyed to Yonago Medical College in June 1946 and was made an official affiliated hospital. But at that time of postwar recovery, Japan experienced a national movement for reform to restructure medical education.

Several of the military medical colleges that were originally founded to educate military doctors had lost their initial rationale, and the Ministry of Education wanted to either disband those with subpar facilities or upgrade those with sound academic capabilities to full-fledged medical universities.

Tottori Prefecture, being aware of the significance of medical education in regional healthcare advancement, waged a strong effort to ensure the promotion of the college. Inspired by Principal Shimoda and other committed champions, students and graduates made regular journeys to Tokyo—toilong train rides of more than 20 hours both ways—to give their argument to the Ministry of Education.

All their efforts and perseverance eventually bore fruit. In February 1948, the government officially sanctioned the promotion of Yonago Medical College to university status, thus founding Yonago Medical University. The transition was an important turning point in the history of the institution, and Yonago Medical College was officially abolished in March 1951 after the reorganization proved successful.

In 1955, there was a grand ceremonial occasion in the Second Clinical Lecture Hall to commemorate the progress of the university. The celebration highlighted the institution’s successes both in and outside the academy, with scholarly conferences, university bulletin exhibits, and published volumes chronicling the Faculty of Medicine’s early years and departmental achievements.

The same year also witnessed a moment of pride in history—the Faculty of Medicine graduated its first batch of students, symbolizing the fulfillment of its original vision to raise competent and caring medical practitioners.

Late 1950s to early 1960s were times of increasing community involvement and educational outreach. Starting from 1957, the university held an open campus event organized by students and the student council, which came to be known later as the “Medical Fair” and then the popular “Nishiki-sai.” These functions turned into a podium for disseminating medical information to the general public.

Students, guided by their teachers, delivered lucid and educative presentations about diseases like cancer and diabetes—themes that were not commonly discussed by the media during those years. The project was widely appreciated for its contribution towards public health education and awareness. At the 1962 open campus day, the university received more than 3,000 guests from the surrounding community as its good reputation and the close relationship between the institution and the people of Yonago continued to grow.

Between 1965 and 1975, the campus experienced drastic infrastructural change. The older wooden and plaster buildings that accommodated the departments of basic medicine were progressively replaced with new structures, radically altering the landscape of the university. This redevelopment not only enriched the learning and research environment but also reflected the faculty’s continued desire to be modernized, scientific advancement, and scholarly excellence.
