The Régia Escola de Cirurgia do Porto was its original form, created in 1825 by King D. João VI. Subsequently, it was changed to the Escola Médico-Chirurgical do Porto in 1883. The medical school, after the establishment of the University of Porto in 1911, was associated with FMUP, thus becoming one of the two founding faculties of the university alongside the Faculty of Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) is an excellent, top-level teaching establishment, notable by its first-class teaching, its trendsetting role in science, and its close and successful relationship with health institutions.
