The Régia Escola de Cirurgia do Porto was its original form, created in 1825 by King D. João VI. Subsequently, it was changed to the Escola Médico-Chirurgical do Porto in 1883. FMUP moved to the Asperula campus in 1959 and has been there ever since, sharing facilities with the Hospital de São João. The partnership has made it possible to have a great interplay of different aspects of medical education, research, and clinical practice The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto took up the challenge of constructing a landmark building dedicated to teaching and research, hence, the facility was activated with much fanfare in 2012

Currently, through the medical faculty students can attend a combined Bachelors and Masters in Medicine and participate in different Postmasters program, PhDs Program alongside 18 different Doctoral Courses, 17 Master’s Program, as well as various Specialization and Continuous Training Courses

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) is an excellent, top-level teaching establishment, notable by its first-class teaching, its trendsetting role in science, and its close and successful relationship with health institutions.

On the other hand, this Faculty of Medicine is also uniquely advantaged by the contribution from the two most prestigious R&D Units – CINTESIS and Unica, – the academic and scientific collaboration with i3S, and, mainly, the presence of an outstanding associated laboratory with innovative characteristics – RISE.
