The political change introduced reforms into the socio-economic system of the country and led to a total reorganization of higher education. Among the most important results was the establishment of the Medical Academy in Poznań, which commenced its activities officially on 1 January 1950 and was soon renamed the Poznan Academy of Medicine (PAM) in March of the same year.

PAM was established by dividing the Faculty of Medicine, the Section of Dentistry, and the Faculty of Pharmacy from the University of Poznań and making them separate institutions. The initial rector of PAM was Professor Tadeusz Kurkiewicz, under whose leadership the institution existed when medical education was specifically separated from other university studies and incorporated within the state healthcare system, with clinical hospital wards becoming county health administration.

From 1950 to 2018, PAM development was influenced both by internal dynamics and by external socio-political factors. The “October political thaw” of 1956 was a turning point, bringing with it democratic processes for the election of academic leaders. Professor Antoni Horst was elected rector during this time, and supervision over state clinical hospitals by PAM greatly increased the quality of medical education and encouraged clinical research.

PAM progressively developed its research, teaching, and clinical capabilities over the following two decades. Among the academy’s greatest accomplishments was founding the European Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center in Poznań (PORC) under Professor Wiktor Dega, who became a pioneering center for fighting polio and creating new rehabilitation methods for disabled patients.

The 1950s and 1960s also witnessed the establishment of a number of specialty research centers, most of which were the first of their type in Poland. These were followed by the Electron Microscopy Center (1957), Isotope Center (1957), Artificial Kidney Center (1958), Dietary Center (1959), Parasite Diseases Center (1961), Occupational Rehabilitation Center (1968), and Hand Surgery Center (1969). In this era, the academy further diversified its areas of study. In addition to medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, the Faculty of Nursing was inaugurated, expanding the range of medical studies.

PAM’s consecutive rectors, such as Professors Horst, Dega, Szczepski, Michałkiewicz, and Góral, were instrumental in acquiring land and funds for campus growth. In the next several decades, the Przybyszewskiego, Marcelińska, Polna, and Bukowska street boundaries were converted into a large construction site, leading to the creation of the current Poznan University of Medical Sciences facilities. 

As brief intervals of academic freedom were experienced by the academy, rising political pressures under the Polish United Workers Party created social tensions and resulted in the emergence of the Independent Trade Union Solidarność in 1980.

Solidarność’s activities introduced democratic rule to Polish universities, including PAM. After two decades of constrained autonomy, free elections were held, resulting in Professor Jerzy Wójtowicz being elected rector and Professor Jacek Łuczak as dean of the School of Medicine. 

On December 15, 1981, PAM’s Senate honored Karol Marcinkowski, a renowned Poznań physician, social activist, and patriot, by naming the academy after him. Still, the imposition of martial law in December 1981 cut short the autonomy of the academy and its progress was delayed because of political and economic factors.

The turning point in contemporary history of Poland, the year 1989, saw the resurrection of the country as an independent state and opened up new possibilities for PAM. Professor Antoni Pruszewicz headed the academy, which adopted a forward-looking approach with a view to increasing research, teaching, and organizational strength. 

It was during this time that the Faculty of Medicine II was formed and the first faculty was renamed Faculty of Medicine I. Significantly, the Section of Medical Studies in English, which was then introduced, became the world’s first English language-only program in medicine offered to international students from all over the globe in Poland. In 1998, the Faculty of Nursing was rechristened the Faculty of Health Sciences to acknowledge its wider scope of academic instruction.

The culmination of all these efforts materialized in 2007 when PAM was officially recognized as a university by the new Law on Higher Education, becoming the Poznań University of Medical Sciences (PUMS)—the first such medical school in Poland. Over the last decade, PUMS has undergone dynamic development, now enrolling nearly 8,000 students, including 1,000 international students from over 50 countries. 

The university offers 22 programs, ranging from classical studies in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing to specialized fields such as obstetrics, physiotherapy, electro-radiology, paramedicine, occupational therapy, medical analytics, cosmetology, dietetics, medical biotechnology, and neurobiology.

PUMS has also heavily invested in contemporary infrastructure. Collegium Stomatologicum, a breathtakingly beautiful building, was launched in 2004. In 2007, the Main Library and Congress Center was opened, followed by the Medical Biology Center in 2014. The Medical Simulation Center, dedicated to Professor Adam Wrzosek, was opened on November 7, 2018, marking almost a hundred years of medical education in Poznań and honoring one of the forefathers of academic medicine in the city.

Since profound changes at Poznan University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) in 2019, the Faculty of Medical Sciences has seven separate areas of study for its programs, carrying on the tradition of medical education set forth in 1992 by the Faculty of Medicine II. The faculty graduates about 350 students every year, along with about 100 dental graduates, which speaks volumes about its academic credibility. 

A Category A faculty recognized by the Ministry of Science, it is renowned for its world-class scientific contributions, well-trained teaching faculty, and wide-ranging educational program that changes in close association with a large number of student groups and the office of the dean to respond to modern academic and professional needs.

The faculty also improves its didactic and practical training facilities continuously, with the students acquiring state-of-the-art skills. These include a well-equipped laboratory for the teaching of hearing prosthetics, a fully equipped phantom room for dental students, and the use of the Medical Simulation Center, where the students sharpen their hands-on skills in a simulated but realistic setting.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences was established formally by the University Senate resolution dated February 25, 1992, as the Medical Faculty, and subsequently renamed on March 11, 1992. On the initiative of then-Rector Professor Antoni Pruszewicz, the new faculty merged the Division of Dentistry and created two new divisions, the Postgraduate Medical Education Division and the Division of Medical Education in English. 

One of the first priorities for the faculty was the establishment of a 4-year doctor’s training program based on American-style medical school curricula with the goal of delivering global-standard medical education.

It was on November 29, 1993, that the faculty was officially empowered to confer academic degrees, a landmark in its academic progress. At the undergraduate level, the faculty concentrated on dentistry and English-language medical programs, and its postgraduate endeavors were on providing mandatory, specialty, and skill-improvement courses in medicine and dentistry through the Postgraduate Medical Education Division.

The greatest challenge for the faculty was the development and ongoing refinement of the MD and DDS programs in English. To address this, the Division for Medical Education in English was created and received its first group of American students in September 1993 in the Advanced MD Program. 

Two years thereafter, the University introduced a 6-year MD course in English, in accordance with the Polish medical curriculum, specifically for students who had finished secondary education. During the 2001/2002 academic year, the DDS course in English was successfully introduced as the first English-language dental program in Poland.

The faculty further developed its study courses: in 2004/2005, it launched full-time and extramural bachelor studies for dental technicians and dental hygienists, plus a master-level course of study in Medical Biotechnology, with a focus on biotechnology usage in medicine.

The excellence and innovativeness of the faculty’s dental and medical education found high acclaim from the Polish State Accreditation Committee in its 2004 inspection. The same year saw dentistry programs relocated to the newly built Center of Dentistry, a state-of-the-art facility constructed after decades of effort by university officials and active support from local parliamentarians. It was a significant milestone in the faculty’s continuous dedication to giving students world-class facilities and training.
