As a result, the faculty at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków remained independent and continued its work primarily for seminarians, while professors from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Warsaw – with traditions reaching back to 1816 – began teaching in Bielany, Warsaw, in premises previously used by Marian priests.

In 1960, the Holy See formally recognized the Academy, and Primate Stefan Wyszyński, Archbishop of Warsaw, became the Grand Chancellor. The institution gained recognition gradually, and in 1989 it attained full ecclesiastical rights and became a state and church university.

ATK initially had only three faculties: Theology, Canon Law, and Christian Philosophy, and because of limitations (numerus clausus), the admission of students was very small. 60 academic teachers taught only 415 students in 1954. During the subsequent decades, the number grew gradually, and in 1987 a Faculty of Church History and Social Sciences was also founded.

The political and social change of Poland in 1989 opened up new chances for development. The university started to develop the academic offer, hire more lecturers, and establish new programs without limiting admissions.

By 1999, ATK already had four faculties and one institute with faculty rights, teaching nine areas of study like theology, canon law, law, philosophy, psychology, history, art history, political science, and family studies. At the time, 295 academic personnel instructed almost 9,000 students.

Noting this trend, on 3 September 1999 the Sejm of the Republic of Poland formally converted the Academy into a complete university and named it Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (UKSW).

This transformation was in memory of Primate Wyszyński, who, as Grand Chancellor, had been responsible for the development of the Academy since the 1960s. The University started functioning as a state university on 1 October 1999 with seven faculties: Theology, Canon Law, Christian Philosophy, Family Studies, Humanities, Law, and Historical and Social Sciences.

In the subsequent years, UKSW continued to expand, introducing new faculties like Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Biology and Environmental Sciences, and eventually raising several institutes to full faculties.

An important milestone was achieved in 2018, with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine – Collegium Medicum, becoming the youngest and one of the most vibrant faculties of UKSW. By 2019, the Faculty of Historical and Social Sciences was split into two separate faculties: Social and Economic Sciences and Historical Sciences, extending even further the scholarly profile of the university.

The growth of UKSW had a direct relation to its growing infrastructure. Until 1999, the university operated in comparatively small premises: a 3,000 m² building in Bielany and a rented-out 2,000 m² building in Młociny. But as the university developed, so did its campuses.

Thanks to the mediation of Cardinal Józef Glemp, UKSW was allocated land for the creation of the Dewajtis Campus, and in Młociny there was the Wóycickiego 1/3 Campus created. The latter is now the university’s principal scientific and educational center.

In 2008 the Center of Education and Interdisciplinary Research was opened there, including the Auditorium Maximum with the concert hall of Robert Schumann for 400 people. In 2015, the Laboratory Center of Natural Sciences opened, with 50 cutting-edge laboratories. In 2022, the Collegium Medicum Faculty of Medicine relocated to its own new, purpose-designed building with state-of-the-art teaching, research, and clinical training facilities.
