The new University of Zielona Góra was formally founded on 1st September 2001 by the amalgamation of these ancient institutions into a single, multi-faceted university. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was founded as a joint project of the University, the Lubuskie Voivodship local government, and municipalities. On March 29, 2010, the then Rector of UZ commissioned a special team to extend the university curriculum to cover medical sciences. 

Following five years of strenuous effort, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education approved, on 19 May 2015, the Faculty of Education, Sociology and Health Sciences to deliver practice-oriented, uniform MD studies in Medicine. Later, on 24 June 2015, the University Senate granted approval for the restructuring and isolation of certain departments — such as the Chair of Physical Education, the Chair of Internal Medicine, and the Department of Nursing — resulting in the official formation of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on 1 October 2015.

The Faculty presently has a wide array of programmes, including work-oriented uniform MD studies in Medicine, with an extramural variant launched in the 2016/2017 academic year. It also has first-cycle (bachelor’s) programmes in Nursing, hosting 199 students in 2015/2016, and general academic studies in Physical Education, both intramural and extramural, with 260 students enrolled in 2015/2016. The second-cycle (master’s) practice program in Physical Education enrolled 122 students in 2015/2016.
