Uczelnia Łazarskiego Wydział Medyczny Warsaw The Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) is a traditional medical university in Poland with over 200 years of history.

About Uczelnia Łazarskiego Wydział Medyczny Warsaw

The university has been on the vanguard of educating highly competent professionals in medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences ever since its establishment.

The origin of medical education in Warsaw dates back to 1809, when a group of renowned physicians—August Wolff, Jacek Dziarkowski, Józef Czekierski, and Franciszek Brandt, and pharmacy assessor Józef Celiński—began the establishment of the Academic-Medical Faculty.

This was due to the severe shortage of physicians in the area. The Governing Commission issued shortly thereafter an order to build a medical school in Warsaw, setting the stage for what would eventually become one of Poland’s most significant medical institutions.

The first graduation ceremony was celebrated on 30 December 1809, when 18 graduates were awarded diplomas, such as doctors of medicine and surgery, surgeons of the first and second grade, chemists, and pharmacists. This was the starting point of organized medical education in Warsaw.

In the following years, the institution evolved significantly. In 1815, Stanisław Kostka Potocki presented a memorandum to Tsar Alexander I, advocating for the establishment of a full university with a Faculty of Medicine. Consequently, on 19 November 1816, the Tsar issued the founding deed of the Royal University of Warsaw, which included five faculties: Theology, Law and Administration, Medicine, Philosophy, Sciences, and Fine Arts.

The official inauguration of the university was held on 1 February 1817, and shortly thereafter, the Faculty of Medicine had its seat in a tenement house on Jezuicka Street. It included fundamental departments like internal medicine, surgery, and obstetrics, as well as the Obstetrics Institute. Right from the start, the faculty educated not only physicians and surgeons, but also midwives, dentists, ophthalmologists, and chemists, which indicated the broad field of healthcare education at that time.

By 1828, new educational regulations insisted on all applicants having a school-leaving certificate (matura) and following a demanding five-year syllabus, which brought higher standards of medical education. Throughout the decades, in spite of closures, reorganizations, and political unrest—such as suppressing the university in 1831 and later restructuring by the Russian Empire—the institution remained a focal point of Polish medical education.

Over the 19th and 20th centuries, the university expanded in size, adding new faculties and divisions like pharmacy, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, always adjusting its courses according to contemporary medical standards. In spite of wars, occupations, and political difficulties, the Medical University of Warsaw held strong to its scholarly mission, even conducting underground classes during World War II in order to preserve the continuity of study.

After the war, the university grew into a contemporary medical academy, after which it resumed its original name of the Medical University of Warsaw in 2008. It has since widened its infrastructure with contemporary clinical hospitals, a Library and Information Center, a Sport and Rehabilitation Center, and the Center for Preclinical Research.

Currently, MUW is a premier institution of medical education and research, the top medical university in Poland in 2024. It has a broad range of programs in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and health sciences, and it engages in advanced clinical training programs, international collaborations, and cutting-edge research projects.

With its legacy dating back, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and dedication to research and development, the Medical University of Warsaw is helping forge the future of medicine not just in Poland but globally.
