The establishment of this academy was an important action aimed at enhancing the medical and healthcare capacity of the Polish Armed Forces. Its main task was to educate highly skilled military medical staff who could effectively work in peacetime and wartime situations.

Resolution necessitated the cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Health, especially in the establishment of the framework for the education of military students and scientific research. To this end, some of the newly established Academy’s academic chairs and departments were structured on the basis of structural units in civilian medical schools.

The first to be formed were the Chair of Biology, Medical Physics, General Chemistry, Physiological Chemistry, Normal Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Pathological Anatomy, General Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine.

Clinical chairs, including the I and II Internal Diseases Departments, the II Surgical Department, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dermatology, Infectious Diseases, Pathobiology (tuberculosis medicine), and Psychiatry, were also formed.

Military Medical Academy Lodz Accreditations, Affiliations, Recognitions

On 25 May 1958, the Medical Academy Senate sanctioned the transfer of 23 independent scientific personnel to full-time status within the Military Medical Academy. Moreover, 51 scientific assistants, 5 laboratory technicians, and 1 technical worker were made available at the Academy’s service so that the new institution would be provided with qualified staff to start its teaching and research activities.

Though the two schools officially split in 1962, close bonds of collaboration were upheld for decades, particularly in the education of dentists and pharmacists. Until 2002, the education of these two professional groups continued to be carried out mainly within the Division of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Pharmacy of the civilian Medical Academy.

This long-standing cooperation was formally governed as early as 1 February 1958, when a formal agreement created rules for concerted activities. These rules outlined the guidelines for the teaching of military students in medicine and pharmacy, the working of civilian personnel within military institutions, the mutual use of facilities for education and research, and the transmission of medical equipment.

In addition, the civilian Medical Academy was also responsible for helping with examinations and recruiting students to the Military Medical Academy.

A turning point in the establishment of the institution was the Ministry of National Defence Order of 19 May 1958, which completed the form and functioning system of the Academy.

The Military Medical Academy in Łódź was officially opened on 1 July 1958, based on the former Military Centre of Medical Education. Brigadier General Professor Marian Garlicki, MD, PhD was appointed as the first Commander-Rector of the Academy, and Colonel Professor Bolesław Gwóźdź as the first Dean of the Medicine Faculty.

At its establishment, the Academy consisted of a number of important institutions, such as the Military Centre of Medical Education, the Central Military Clinical Hospital in Łódź, the Central Hospital of the Ministry of National Defence in Warsaw, and the Centre of Reserve Officers’ Education in Przemyśl.
