University of Pécs Faculty of General Medicine Pecs Hungary “The University of Pécs” has a history dating back thousands of years. The area was first inhabited by the Pannonian Celtic nations, who built a castle surrounded by walls and a defensive moat. Under the rule of the Roman Emperor Trajan (98–117 AD), the settlement became the city of Sopianae.

About University of Pécs Faculty of General Medicine Pecs Hungary

Subsequently, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (284–305 AD), Sopianae became more prominent and was the provincial capital of Valeria in Lower Pannonia. Archaeological digs show evidence of a rich and lovely Roman city, with the earliest Christian burial chambers.

These early underground burial tombs, dating to the 3rd century, emphasize Sopianae’s position as being among a mere eight locations throughout Pannonia (bordered by the Danube, Sava, and Alps) known to contain a church at this time. With Constantine the Great (306–337 AD), the city was established as the seat of a bishopric, reinforcing its status as a hub of early Christianity.

During the centuries that ensued, Sopianae saw the passing of numerous peoples, ranging from Attila’s Huns to settling South Slavic migrants, who finally settled in the region. In the late 8th century, Emperor Charlemagne (768–814) subjugated the Avars and strengthened Christian dominance in the region. About 865, Salzburg Archbishop Lipham consecrated a church at the base of the Miczek hills.

Historical accounts were made during this time referring to “ad Quinque (martirum) basilicas”—”at the five basilicas of the martyrs”—a title later shortened to Latin name Quinque Ecclesiae, or Unkriches in German. In Hungarian, it was referred to as Pécs, possibly because the Slavic word pety, meaning “five,” was used for it.

The core of the city is covered by its cathedral, first built during the Arcadian period and afterwards rebuilt several times. Today, it is one of Europe’s best Neo-Romanesque churches. In the course of time, Pécs became one of Hungary’s biggest and most important cities.

King Louis the Great (1342–1382) not only commanded his military expeditions from here but also promoted cultural and intellectual development. Impelled by his father, King Charles Robert, and encouraged by the vision of Italian poet Petrarch, Louis established Hungary’s first university in 1367. The historic institution arose roughly at the same time as other great Central European universities—those at Prague, Krakow, and Vienna.

The establishment of the university was facilitated both by Hungarian prosperity in the years of the Anjou kings and by the intellectual energy of Hungarian scholars, many of whom had learned at Italian universities like Bologna and Padua and even served as rectors and great professors there.

Pécs also served as a preferred residence of Hungarian kings, such as Louis the Great and Matthias Corvinus. Its fame extended beyond the borders of Hungary: the great Ottoman leader Suleiman the Magnificent famously described Pécs as a “paradise on earth.” This long and rich history of cultural, religious, and educational achievement firmly rooted Pécs as a city of lasting significance in Central Europe.

University of Pécs Faculty of General Medicine Pecs Hungary – Ranking

The separate Hungarian defence forces were formally created in 1868, which prompted an immediate need for a professional officer corps. The only school of military training in the country was the Ludovika Academy of Pest at that time, and it could not cope with the growing demand.

At the close of the 19th century, Hungary had a shortage of almost 1,000 officers, which led the Minister of Defence, Géza Fejérváry, to issue a decree in 1897 directing the founding of three more military schools. Amongst the cities under consideration as possible locations were Pécs, Sopron, and Nagyvárad.

The work of designing these new schools fell to the highly acclaimed Hungarian architect Ignác Alpár, whose buildings are some of the most beautiful architectural accomplishments of the time. For the Pécs cadet school, the municipality donated a large area of land—about 20 acres—sitting along the Szigeti Highway. The state and municipality jointly covered the land cost, whereas the state covered the construction costs.

The ensuing building was of the neo-Baroque style, monumental, and imposing, with an E-shaped floor plan and three floors. The building had space for about 400 cadets and included 160 rooms. The first floor housed a range of facilities aimed at both the day-to-day requirements of the cadets and their cultural development. These were the dining halls, entertainment rooms like dance and singing spaces, a billiard room, a lounge, and a reading hall.

After the disturbances of World War I, the Cadet School was moved to western Hungary in 1918 but back to Pécs in 1922, once the Serbian occupation had ceased. Throughout the decades, its name and purpose shifted many times due to changing political and wartime demands. It was only in 1956 that the complex as a whole—the building and accompanying land—was passed over to the Medical University of Pécs (POTE).

The site was transformed shortly afterwards: a 400-bed clinic was built in the northern part, while in 1965 work was done to renovate the former military structures into contemporary facilities for the university’s theoretical institutes, according to designs by the architect Pál Borosnyai.

The most dramatic change took place in November 1970, when the erstwhile neo-Baroque cadet college, revamped both externally and internally, was revamped as a contemporary academic complex with a flat roof and rectangular shape.

Ever since, the building has stood as the theoretical headquarters of the Medical University of Pécs, and after the institutional integration in 2000, it still operates as part of the University of Pécs Medical School on Szigeti Street—a building that represents both the city’s military history and its long tradition of education and medicine.
