In the past, Alexandroupolis has been molded by its special geographical position, between Europe and Asia—regularly referred to as a bridge between “East” and “West.” Its close proximity to Constantinople (now Istanbul) has long positioned the city as strategically significant.

Demokritos University of Thrace Department of Medicine Alexandroupolis Accreditations, Affiliations, Recognitions
As a result of the administrative reform scheme known as “Kallikreins,” the Municipality of Alexandroupolis was enlarged to incorporate Triopolies and Feres, with a total area of 1,217 sq. km. The city today provides both residents and tourists a good quality of life, balancing urbanization, protection of the environment, and a vibrant culture.
The area has a rich past, with settlements going back to the Neolithic period and thriving cities during antiquity. The region was initially occupied by the ancient Kik ones tribe and subsequently part of Samothrace Perea, which included historic cities like Mesovaria, Zone, and Sali— the last of these being equated with contemporary Alexandroupolis.
In the period under the Byzantines, the region was a significant geopolitical location by virtue of its proximity to Constantinople. Yet some of these old settlements—Sali, Zone, Drys, and Serrio—were later devastated or lost to historical memory, to be succeeded by vast oak forests.
Under Ottoman times, the place was referred to as Dede Agats, where Turkish landlords owned large tracts of land for farming and grazing. After the Russo-Turkish War, Ainos, Makri, and Maroneia fishermen founded a small village that eventually expanded with the development of the railway to become the basis for contemporary Alexandroupolis.
The Dede Agats was during the Balkan Wars transferred from Ottoman to Bulgarian rule, but under the Treaty of Neuilly, it was officially annexed into Greece on May 14, 1920. The city was occupied by Bulgaria again during World War II (1941–1944).
Following the liberation, Alexandroupolis embarked on a new cycle of economic, cultural, and social growth, establishing itself as an active urban and regional hub in North Greece.
