Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine Cairo Demerdash Hospital was first opened in 1928 through a donation from Mr. Abdel Rahim El Demerdash Pasha. Subsequently, in 1947, the Faculty of Medicine was founded and named Demerdash Faculty of Medicine, which was, at that time, affiliated with Fouad I University (now Cairo University).

About Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine Cairo

In 1950, the faculty became officially part of Ain Shams University, becoming the third Egyptian medical school, after Cairo and Alexandria. Directly associated with the faculty was Demerdash Hospital, its principal teaching hospital, and including most of the principal surgical specialties.

To meet the increasing academic requirements, Freedom Shelter buildings, adjacent to the hospital, were selected as the headquarters of several scientific departments like anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, and museums and specialized departments in the postgraduate years like forensic medicine and preventive medicine. As part of its overall development vision for the long term, the faculty started an overall program of expansion, renewal, and modernization.

This involved the construction of new academic buildings in place of some older buildings—such as the forensic medicine and toxicology complex, which now also accommodates the departments of pathology, parasitology, internal medicine, and bacteriology. The expansion also incorporated the terrace building, which has three large lecture halls, and the metal building, four floors high, two of which are used for examination halls.
