The university was formally established in May 2003 through the consolidation of four historically well-known institutions: the Jianghan Petroleum Institute, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College, and Hubei Provincial Medical College. Each of these predecessor institutions brought with it its own strengths and traditions: Jianghan Petroleum Institute, formerly the Beijing Petroleum Industry College established in 1950, started undergraduate programs in 1978 as an affiliate of China National Petroleum Corporation. It was jointly administered by the central and local governments since 2000 and subsequently handed over to Hubei Province.

Hubei Agricultural College, previously the Jingzhou Branch of Huazhong Agricultural College which was set up in 1977, was sanctioned as an undergraduate full-fledged institution by the State Education Commission in 1989. Jingzhou Normal College, with antecedents dating to the Hubei Fourth District Simple Normal School established in 1936, became the Jingzhou Branch of Huazhong Normal College in 1977 and was reorganized into Jingzhou Normal College in 1999.

Hubei Provincial Medical College for Health Workers, which had its beginning as the Hubei Shashi Health School in 1951, was subsequently the Jingzhou Branch of Wuhan Medical College in 1977 and took its ultimate shape as the Provincial Medical College in 1984.

Yangtze University today has two campuses of major concern—both in Jingzhou and Wuhan. The Jingzhou campus is located in a city renowned as a cradle of Chinese civilization. The central library is a storehouse of knowledge with more than 4.38 million printed books, 1.51 million electronic books, 51,000 full-text electronic journals, and an opening to 74 digital databases in both Chinese and foreign languages.

Yangtze University is also characterized by its high-level faculty. Among its 3,055 staff members, 1,928 are full-time teachers holding 364 professor and 819 associate professor positions. Over 1,150 faculty members have doctoral qualifications, and 310 people are honored as recipients of prominent national, ministerial, or provincial-level talent program titles, such as 54 nationally acclaimed experts. The university also has 159 doctoral supervisors and more than 1,300 master’s supervisors, offering robust mentorship for postgraduate studies.

Academically, Yangtze University is a doctoral institution with a complete range of programs. It has five first-level doctoral degree programs in Geology, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Crop Science, and Plant Protection. The university also has three postdoctoral research stations in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, and Crop Science.
