The WMU history begins in 1912, when the previous Zhejiang Specialized Medical School began operating in Hangzhou as one of the first institutions of higher learning in modern medicine.

Faculty members from Hangzhou were dispatched in August 1958 to Wenzhou to set up Zhejiang Second Medical College, then known as Wenzhou Medical College, and in 2013 it was formally named Wenzhou Medical University.
