Shenyang Medical College – Ranking

Shenyang Medical College’s School of International Education (International Exchange and Cooperation Office) has a rich tradition of promoting international engagement. It began in 2002, when the International Exchange Office was initially created to manage the university’s overseas affairs and international collaborations.

It was renamed the International Cooperation and Exchange Office in 2008, with the creation of the International Education Center located alongside the office to broaden its international program role in serving students.

By 2012, the institution experienced another reformation, taking its current name — the School of International Education (International Exchange and Cooperation Office) — and structuring itself into three department-level units: the Office (consisting of the Foreign Affairs Department and the Academic Affairs Department), the Admissions Department, and the Student Affairs Department.

As the centralized administrative organ of the university for global affairs, the School of International Education plays a crucial role in implementing foreign policies, international student admissions and education, and global cooperation and exchange programs.

Its duties include the recruitment and administration of international students, the introduction of global expertise, and management of foreign experts on campus. It also helps in making strategic alliances with foreign universities, hosts and co-ordinates major international events, receives foreign guests and delegations, and supervises negotiation, signing, execution, and monitoring of cooperation agreements between Shenyang Medical College and international allies.

In the wake of furthering cooperation at the international level, the school has become a member of such prestigious memberships as the “Belt and Road” International Medical Education Alliance and the South and Southeast Asia Medical Education and Health Alliance. It has so far signed cooperation agreements with around 26 internationally recognized universities and research institutions in China as well as overseas.

During the years, over 200 student and faculty exchange visits have been made to universities in the United States, including Indiana Wesleyan University and the University of Arizona, the Sasebo City Government in Japan, and through medical cooperation with the Korea International Medical Culture Exchange Association.

In addition, the school has progressively developed an order-based nurse training program aimed at enabling graduates for professional practice within Japan. The School of International Education actively implements a comprehensive international development strategy.

Currently, the university hosts 2,220 international students from 64 countries, with 58 students benefiting from foreign government scholarships. Impressively, the passing rate for the practicing physician qualification examination among international graduates has maintained a consistent average of 73% over the past decade.

The academic prestige of the university has also been reflected through the Shanghai Ranking (“Soft Science” ranking), which has consistently ranked the university among the top six in China based on international education quality.

In 2004, upon approval by the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education and registration with the Ministry of Education, the university was identified as an international student training base, and it became one of the first institutions in Liaoning Province officially allowed to admit self-funded international students.

In 2013, it marked a critical milestone when it passed the Clinical Medicine Professional Certification of the Ministry of Education, thus being included in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). Up to this point, the college has graduated successfully 1,542 foreign students with a remarkable 73.2% pass rate for medical licensure exams back in their native countries.

The institution’s success in global education has been well acknowledged. It was recognized as “Exemplary Organization of Liaoning Province for International Education in China” in 2021, and in 2023, it was awarded the designation of a “Pilot School for the Evaluation of Internationalization Level of Colleges and Universities in Liaoning Province”, upholding its position as a leader in developing high-quality, globally focused medical education.
