The Medical School has evolved to be a thoroughgoing academic and research center, comprising six professional schools: the School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, and School of Public Health.

Shenzhen University College of Medicine also has three major centers—the Medical Center, the Medical Humanistic Center, and the Carson Cancer Center—and has 20 affiliated and teaching hospitals in partnership with them. There are among them 58 professors, 6 research fellows, 35 associate professors, and 52 associate research fellows—with a whopping 95% of them possessing doctoral degrees.

The school has faculty consisting of an American Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering academician, a Chinese Academy of Sciences foreign academician and a Chinese Academy of Engineering foreign academician, a National Academy of Sciences academician, a Chinese Academy of Engineering academician, and even a Nobel laureate.

The school is also a hub of medical research. Faculty members conducted 1,112 research projects at different levels between 2018 and 2019, with a total research funding of more than RMB 1.77 billion. Of them, 471 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Between 2016 and 2019, the staff authored a total of 1,710 SCI-indexed journal papers, among which 155 (as first and/or corresponding authors) were published in high-impact journals comparable to or higher than PNAS and 34 in high-profile journals like Nature, Science, Cell, and their sub-journals.

The Bachelor’s program in Clinical Medicine at Shenzhen University (SZU) was officially approved by the Ministry of Education, marking the beginning of SZU’s journey into medical education. In December 2008, the SZU Medical School was formally established—becoming the first medical school in the city of Shenzhen. Today, it is led by Professor Baoguo Jiang, a distinguished member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who serves as the Dean.

Famed across the country for its medical and scientific greatness, SZU Medical School has made great strides in a vast array of specialties, ranging from genome medicine, immunology, cancer studies, aging and metabolism research, therapeutic lead compound discovery, AI-based medical imaging, advanced medical device development, orthopedics, neurosurgery, burn surgery, and pain management.

The Medical School consists of nine professional academic units: School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, Department of Family Medicine, International Cancer Center, and Medical Humanities Center. These are backed by a strong clinical training network consisting of four affiliated hospitals and thirteen teaching hospitals, which give students extensive practical medical experience. SZU Medical School has six undergraduate majors—Clinical Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dental Medicine, and Preventive Medicine.

Postgraduate studies consist of three academic PhD programs (Biomedical Engineering, Biology, and Basic Medical Sciences) and three academic Master’s programs (Biomedical Engineering, Basic Medical Sciences, and Clinical Medicine). Five professional Master’s programs in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Pharmaceutical Science, Public Health, and Dental Medicine are also provided.

Today, the school boasts a dynamic student population of 4,553 full-time students, including 2,496 undergraduates, 1,882 graduate students, 115 doctoral students, and 60 overseas students from varying backgrounds.

SZU Medical School’s faculty is just as remarkable with a total number of 451 members. Of them, 232 are full-time teaching and research staff, including 6 Chair Professors, 25 Distinguished Professors, 34 Professors, 74 Associate Professors or Senior Lecturers, 98 Assistant Professors or Lecturers, and 85 Postdoctoral Researchers. Most of the faculty have acquired rich overseas academic or research experience, and 96.6% of the faculty possess doctoral degrees.

The university also houses 25 nationally renowned talent scholars, five domestic and foreign academicians, and one Nobel Laureate, further enhancing its academic status. Between 2017 and 2024, the school obtained 2,472 funded research tasks with a total value of RMB 1.896 billion, including 946 NSFC grants. Between 2017 and 2024, faculty published 10,648 papers in journals indexed by SCI, of which 1,063 were high-impact ones at PNAS level or above, and 405 were published in top-tier journals like Nature, Science, Cell, and their sub-journals.
