Ten years later, in 1956, the college became self-governing and was reorganized into Qingdao Medical College, which became one of China’s earliest 36 higher medical institutions qualified to provide extensive medical education and research.

A landmark in its growth came in 1993, when Qingdao Medical College was consolidated with Qingdao University, Shandong Textile Engineering Institute, and Qingdao Normal School to create the new, enlarged Qingdao University. This strategic merger was done to promote greater interdisciplinary cooperation and integration of learning across disciplines, including medicine.
