The origins of Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST) date back to the founding of Hubei Gongyixuetang (Hubei Technical School) in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong (1837–1909), a veteran statesman and reformer who was the Viceroy of Huguang Province in the late Qing Dynasty.
