The University in the 14th Century
In the 14th century, the university was awarding degrees in General Arts and Law. The disciplines of Medicine, Philosophy, and Logic became prominent ones, although they were not granted autonomous faculty status then. In 1371, at the behest of the public and the City Council, Pope Gregory XI is supposed to have established a Faculty of Theology. No documentation, however, verifies this.
The Statute of 1306 also provided university students with the privilege of establishing an association, or “Universitas”: Scolaribus qui sunt et pro tempore erunt in civitate Perusii sit licitum universitatem constituere. The organization was similar to a corporation, run by a Rector who made sure members followed university statutes. As a legitimate corporation, the Universitas took part in city government while managing academic affairs and ensuring course quality.
Over the course of the century, the university saw great academic expansion with the drawing of great professors to its ranks. Among the first was Iacopo da Belviso of Bologna, a great legal scholar whose monographic lectures—similar to modern-day case studies—attracted large numbers of students to Perugia. His replacement, Cino dei Sinibuldi of Pistoia, was both a poet and a jurist.
One of his pupils, Bartolo da Sassoferrato, went on to become one of medieval era’s most important legal thinkers. Sassoferrato himself lectured at the university from 1354 to his death in approximately 1357, developing the “Commentary” approach to legal study.
Another leading scholar of the period was Baldo degli Ubaldi, who became professor in 1348 and lectured for thirty years. His vast knowledge and jurisprudence skill further cemented the reputation of the university. In the medical field, the highest professor of the university, Gentile da Foligno, contributed significantly to medical science but eventually was the victim of the plague in 1348. His uncompromising quest for knowledge resulted in him spending long hours caring for the sick, proving both his commitment and the dangers, that scholars of the time faced.
