Edge Hill University Medical School – Ranking

Edge Hill University dates back to 1882, when philanthropists set up a women’s teacher training college in Liverpool’s Edge Hill area, which opened officially in 1885. In the 1930s, the College moved to Ormskirk, with the foundation stone being laid in 1931 and the new premises opened in 1933 by Lord Irwin, then President of the Board of Education. During World War II, the original Durning Road premises were sadly bombed in 1940 with many lives lost and students having to carry on their studies at Bingley Training College. 

After the war, student numbers started to increase, and in 1959 the college opened its doors to male students for the first time, requiring new halls of residence to be built. The 1960s saw important educational and cultural developments, such as the establishment of three-year teaching degrees approved by Lancaster University and a visit from Princess Margaret in 1963. 

During the 1970s, Edge Hill started to deliver more degree courses and developed its campus facilities, including a new library building in 1973. Having escaped a planned merger in 1982 by a very narrow margin, the College became a Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education. It became independent from local authority control in 1989, having its own Board of Governors.

During the 1990s, there was rapid expansion and diversification under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor John Cater. It was renamed Edge Hill University College in 1996 and diversified its academic provision in areas such as Criminology, Computer Science, and Sports Science. In 2006, Edge Hill gained full university status and started awarding its own degrees, and then research degree-awarding powers in 2008. 

Significant campus development followed, with new buildings for faculties like Education, Health and Social Care, Performing Arts, and Business and Law. The international presence of the university also grew during this period. In the 2010s, Edge Hill was ‘University of the Year’ according to Times Higher Education in 2014, testament to its outstanding advancement and influence. 

The university’s research attained national recognition, with every REF-submitted subject awarded either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent.’ Presently, Edge Hill University is home to more than 14,000 students, and awards still continue to applaud its distinction in education, research, and facilities.
