The roots of the University of Sassari lie in the middle of the sixteenth century when the Sardinian towns of Cagliari and Sassari competed with each other over the creation of university seats in the Kingdom. 

The foundation of the university has its roots closely linked to Alessio Fontana, a representative of the imperial chancellery of Charles V, who in 1558 left his goods to the municipality for the formation of a college of studies. But it was not until February 9, 1617, that King Philip III bestowed the Jesuit college with royal university status, which made Sassari the seat of the first royal university. 

Education reforms in 1765 added the four classical faculties—Philosophy and Arts, Theology, Law, and Medicine—while Piedmontese professors were invited to update the curriculum and bring European cultural and Enlightenment values. These initiatives facilitated Sardinia’s economic and natural resource research and helped bring into being a new class of rulers. But the university went through a phase of decline in the early nineteenth century, and it was proposed to suppress it under the Casati Law of 1847. 

The local community and parliamentarians opposed this strongly, and the decision was reversed. By 1877, the university was on par with secondary schools, and a new era of expansion began. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries experienced a revival led by the dissemination of positivist culture in medicine, sciences, and law, with famous professors like Pasquale Piga, Antonio Conti, and Enrico Besta playing an important role. 

More growth followed in the early twentieth century when the university became more deeply entrenched in the national academic system. Renowned scholars such as Angelo Roth, Luigi Maggiore, and Massimo Severo Giannini were instrumental, while new schools like Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine were established in 1934, and Agriculture in 1950, which considerably shaped Sardinia’s social and economic growth. 

The later twentieth century witnessed ongoing expansion, with the opening of faculties in Teaching (subsequently Letters and Philosophy), Political Sciences, Languages, and Economics, culminating in 11 faculties as of 2002, which were subsequently reorganized into the present 10 departments.
