Hangzhou Normal University (HZNU) has a historical lineage dating back to 1908 when it was founded as the Zhejiang Official Dual-Level Normal School. The university was later renamed Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School in 1913. It was a leader in promoting democracy and science in Zhejiang when there were transformations and turmoil. Hangzhou Teachers College was established in 1978 from Hangzhou Normal School, and in the early 21st century, the college merged with a number of institutions to become the current Hangzhou Normal University in 2007.

The current university currently has 24 schools and two hospitals, located on three campuses—Cangqian, Xiasha, and Yuhuangshan—covering some 190 hectares with a floor area of 1.9 million square meters.
